I am 22 from Kansas City, Kansas and my question is what are the risks and benefits of using tanning beds?Suzan Obagi: Well Brynn, there is little to no benefit with tanning your skin weather it is a tanning bed or with natural sunlight and there are actually is a lot of harm that can be done from the process. Most young adults such as yourself think they look or feel better with a little color to their skin and for that reason we see a lot of eye on the dust going out to the tanning beds or out in the sunlight trying to tan the skin.However, any little bit of color in the skin that is achieved from exposure to ultraviolet light is a sign of damage to the skin and that means that if you were to continue this practice eventually you will start to see the signs of sun damage in the skin such as fine lines, fine wrinkles in the beginning leading to deeper lines and wrinkles, sun spots and freckles will become darker and larger over time and eventually you may see the development of precancerous lesions and eventually skin cancer.
